181: Ask Denis: Coping with the Unexpected

At the time of this episode the Olympics are upon us. So many interesting stories and events are transpiring, but I’d like to look at someone specific today and how they were able to overcome an unexpected challenge. The only thing we can expect in this life is that we will inevitably encounter the unexpected. We will all face adversity and ambiguity, but it’s what we do next that determines our outcome. So with that in mind, let’s get inspired as leaders and learn about coping with the unexpected.

On this episode:

  • Let’s look at what happened to Sifan Hassan. Everyone already counted her out, but she got back up and won the race despite the odds and later winning the gold. For our lives, how can we keep our energy up despite the odds?
  • We’ll look at the 3 things that stood out to me relating to Sifan’s story and how we can apply those 3 things to our own leadership. We’ll also look at 3 key questions that you should think about.

Key Takeaways:

  • The story of Sifan Hassan
  • Winning gold after a heavy fall
  • The importance of keeping your energy up
  • Focus – put aside the problem and go for the goal
  • Discipline – run your own race
  • Determination/grit – facing of adversity
